August 20, 1919
The Worth County Fair is the first event of importance to occur in Northwood since the Chautauqua and the officials are making great preparations to entertain the usual crowds in better style than ever.
The large barn on the farm one and one-half miles from Gordonsville, owned by Mrs. Susie From and occupied by Archie Buley, burned to the ground about noon Monday. It is said the barn was filled with hay and grain and the loss is quite heavy.
Master Clinton Lay returned home Sunday from Forest City after a week’s visit with his little friends, Harvey and Morris Gunderson. Clinton left Monday morning with the Boy Scouts for a week’s camping on the Cedar River two miles west of Osage. Mrs. E. W.
Mrs. Littlefield was a passenger Saturday evening for Des Moines, where she is this week visiting the wholesale millinery houses in company with trimmer.  It's Martha Bell of Glidden and selecting a stock of headwear and millinery trimmings to delight the ladies of Northwood and the vicinity.
Mr. And Mrs. Ralph A. Moore and children of Athboy, S.D., came last Wednesday to Kensett accompanying the body of Mr. Moore’s mother, who died near Athboy where she was making her home with her son.  This week they are visiting here in the home of the lady’s parents. Mr. And Mrs. W.H. Keller, it being the first visit in four years for Mrs. Moore.
The Equity and Farm Bureau picnic held on the shores  of Silver Lake yesterday was well attended by farmers and their families and a few business men of surrounding towns.

August 24, 1944
Dale Theo Trenhaile, formerly of near Grafton, has been notified to report for pre-induction physical examination in Honolulu, Hawaiian Island, where he has been a civil service employee at Pearl Harbor navy yard for over two years. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Trenhaile of near Grafton.
L.J. Thompson, third district Worth County supervisor serving his ninth year, who was defeated for reelection in the Republican primary last June by Helmer I. Harmon of Northwood, last week filed as an independent candidate for the office. The law requires that nomination papers for an independent candidate for a district office, such a supervisor, have signatures of at least 25 voters in the district. Mr. Thompson’s name will be printed in the independent column on the general election ballots to be voted November 7.
Miss Fern Nodtvedt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Nodtvedt of Kensett, and Flight Officer John Rothael, son of Mr. And Mrs. Nick Rothamel of Mason City, were married at the Holy Family rectory in Mason City last Thursday evening by the Rev. R.P. Murphy.
Two more Worth County boys, Sgt. Laverne Kaasa of Hanlontown and Pvt. Kenneth Fredrick Paulson of Grafton, are reported missing in action, both in the French theatre of war. Messages from the war department to this effect were received during the past week by their parents.

Approximately 960 students are expected to enroll on Wednesday, August 27, when the Northwood-Kensett Community Schools open for the 1969-70 school year. Nearly 100 teachers and employees will be on hand to greet returning students.
Eight regular bus routes will be needed for the 1969-70 school year to transport Northwood-Kensett pupils. This is one less than last year, and indicates the population trend for the area and particularly rural areas. This is the fourth bus route that has been eliminated in the past six years. Each bus driver will plan his route so that he can arrive in town by 8:10 a.m. each morning. Shuttles to the high school, junior high and elementary must depart at 8:14 a.m.
Boyd Implement Co., Northwood, received an order Tuesday to provide 10,000 to 12,000 Dodge truck chassis to Winnebago Industries, Inc., Forest City. It is estimated the total order could come to between $30 and $37.5 million.
A killing frost by September 19 could damage almost 80 percent of the corn in North Central Iowa, according to a release this week by the Iowa Crop Reporting Service and the Iowa State University Cooperative Extension Service. The reporting service estimate only 20 percent of the corn crop will be safe form freezing by the September 19 date. This is based on evidence that the corn crop matures approximately 55 days following the date that a field is 75 percent silked.

Classes at Northwood-Kensett High School won’t start until next Monday, August 29, but three juniors-to-be couldn’t resist comparing their class schedules last Thursday afternoon during registration at N-K Junior-Senior High. The girls are Jessica Avelar, Angie Thorson and Susan Lemmon.
The waning days of Summer vacation brings out kids' ingenuity to wile away the time. Mitch Hanson, Colby and Kelly Carlson and Cory Jaspers cruised down to the swimming pool hill on Tonka trucks, Wednesday.
An ever-growing group of boys congregated on the car bridge at Swensrud Park last week. Word got out that bullheads were biting. One ‘fisherman’ said he caught 15 bullheads in a period of a 1/2 hour.
The coaches’ whistles were the only accompaniment Northwood-Kensett seniors Tim Thofson and Luke Hoffman had as they danced their way through the second day of Viking football drills last Friday.
ADA Enterprises executives Kevin Stenzel, Tom Stensrud and Allan Stensrud are working to increase their share of the leisure and recreation market with its plastic-covered steel bench, which is on display outside the Northwood Civic Center. The 15 benches the city bought will be black in color.

This fall Iowa voters will take part in elections to decide who will fill spots on area school boards and in city governments. Seven people have filed papers and will appear on ballots in the school board election. That includes Kathy Arnold, Rhonda Fridley, Roger Harris, Susan Kliment, Jennifer Krull, Jennifer Lombard and incumbent Don Pangburn.
With the school year set to begin, a number of area young people have taken the opportunity to give Northwood-Kensett Elementary’s new playground equipment a test run. Based on the reactions of the young people from Carolyn Geoder’s Daycare, including Kooper Julseth, 2, Kael Julseth, 6, Shallon Batton, 6, and Emma Hengesteg, 4, the latest playground adding additions will be a highly sought-after recess destination.
This past July, Connie Hickle of Flower Zone by Connie, took part in the July Rose For Kids Program. Hickle’s participation included offering a dozen roses at a special price. She then dedicated $1 for each dozen, as well as a percentage of the sales to the Worth Joining Generations, Worth County’s mentoring program. During the special promotion, Hickle sold 62 dozen roses. She presented a check of $62, $1 per dozen, to Worth Joining Generation coordinator Kristie Parks. Hickle’s wholesale florist, Koehler and Dram, also pledged to donate a percentage of the sales to local charity and to children’s charities in South America, where the roses were grown.
