Vikings dominate Siouxland Christian/Whiting in season opener

The Eagles, who haven’t played a varsity schedule in a few years, seemed out-matched from the start, when they fumbled away the opening kickoff, leading to a 7-0 lead for the Vikings after Brandon Varner rushed four times for 23 yards and an early touchdown.
The home team managed to field the ensuing kick, but Triston Rothove stepped in front of a quick slant pattern for an interception on the Eagles' first play from scrimmage, for turnover number two.
Two plays later Varner ran over a few Eagles on a 12-yard run and his second touchdown of the night, giving the Vikings an early 14-0 lead.
Like a broken record, another Eagles turnover, their third in three possessions, led to a Carter Severson score and a 21-0 advantage.
With the Vikings linemen putting pressure on the quarterback, a broken play led to the Eagles' only score on the night, a 67-yard touchdown pass that made the score look a little better at 21-8.
The Vikings offense continued to pour it on in the first half of play, scoring on runs of 51 (Kyle Nichols), 23 (Caden Schrage), 14 (Dante Sims), 17 (Varner) and 15 (TJ Whitelow).
Looking at a 56-8 advantage on opening night and so far surviving with no injuries, Cap decided to pull the starters for the second half of play with the Vikings eventually taking the win, 69-8.
Varner and Schrage led the potent N-K ground game with 76 and 75 yards respectively, while Nichols averaged 13.2 yards per carry and scored his first varsity touchdown. Whitelow averaged 22.3 yards on just three carries and also scored the first touch down of his varsity career.
On the defensive side of the ball Kael Julseth and Gideon Rollene led the team with 4.5 tackles each while Schrage led the team with two picks, giving him nine interceptions for his career.
The Vikings started the season at 1-0 and hosted Harris-Lake Park last Friday night. N-K beat H-LP last season on the road 26-0, the second of its six shutouts in the first eight games.
