Vikings rush for 365 yards in 41-0 district win over Dunkerton

Bouncing back from its defeat last week at the hands of Harris-Lake Park, the Northwood-Kensett football team ran over Dunkerton on Friday night for a season high 365 yards in the team's 41-0 district win, the seventh defensive shutout for the Vikings in their last 12 games, dating back to last season.
N-K, which never throws the ball much, completed just one of four pass attempts as it used its ground game to go out in front of Dunkerton 14-0 after the first quarter and 27-0 at the halftime break.
The Vikings, who ran for a season high 365 yards on 39 attempts or 9.35 yards every time they touched the ball, found the end zone two more times in the third quarter and cruised to the easy 41-0 win with a running clock in all of the fourth quarter.
The Vikings had three players who averaged a first down on every carry, including Brandon Varner (153 yards, 10.9 per carry), Tyler Mills (23 yards, 11.5 per carry) and Caden Schrage (117 yards, 10.9 per carry).
Varner led the team on both sides of the ball, rushing for a team high 153 yards and four touchdowns, while on the defensive side of the ball he had 8.5 tackles. Sophomore Kyle Nichols added eight tackles and two sacks while Schrage had 5.5 tackles and two interceptions.
Schrage now holds the 8-man singles season and career interception record along with the team’s all-time interception record of 13, surpassing Cody Hanson, Erik Parker and Blake Palmer, who were tied with 10 each.
On offense, N-K used numerous players to earn that 365 yards rushing, including seven who ran for positive yardage, Mills (23 yards), Nichols (21 yards), Schrage (117 yards), Carter Severson (35 yards), Dante Sims (3 yards), Varner (153 yards) and TJ Whitelow (15 yards).
With the win over Dunkerton, the Vikings are now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in district 2.
N-K will face North Iowa in Buffalo Center this Friday.
The Vikings' last loss to the Bison was their last in the 11-man game, a 19-6 loss in 2011-12. Since that loss, the two teams have met five times playing 8-man football with the Vikings winning all five by an average of 59.4-12.
