Facing some pretty tough competition in the Top of Iowa Conference East this season the Vikings of Northwood-Kensett were able to come out on top in seven games this season, averaging only 40.7 points per game as a team. But despite the low number of wins the Vikings did have two players earn all-...
N-K’s Drake Tiedemann controls the action in last week’s state wrestling tournament held at Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines. Tiedemann went 3-2 over the course of the tournament and placed seventh overall.
If you have followed the career of Northwood-Kensett’s Drake Tiedemann at all you would have had to conclude that he would one day make it to the state tournament. But not only did Tiedemann make it in his third try, he also did what most don’t do on their first attempt in Des Moines, he made it...
The Vikings' Jason Hanson slides in the lane for a short jumper last Tuesday night in Janesville. Hanson scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds in N-K’s 69-41 loss to the Wildcats.
Coming into this season the Vikings had one thing on their minds, win more than three games. That’s the most wins Northwood-Kensett has had since 2015, when it won nine games. This team however did what it set out to do as it won as many games this season, seven, as it had the past three years...
The last time I spoke about a freshman point guard and how good she could become it was Brooke Burnes, who went on to become what I consider the best PG in the school’s history. Her 267 career assists, No. 1 all-time, back that up. Now another one has come along who has the same kind of skills that propelled Burnes to the top, this year’s freshman sensation, Madalynn Hanson. Hanson wasn’t much of a scoring threat this season, averaging just 2.8 points per game, but with her deadly ball handling skills she i
The Northwood-Kensett girls basketball team traveled to Algona last Tuesday night for its scheduled regional quarterfinal matchup against class 1A’s No. 1 ranked Bishop-Garrigan, who held on to that top ranking with a lopsided 79-24 win. The Golden Bears, led by a pair of sophomores named Molly...
The person who came up with the phrase nice guys finish last never met N-K’s Drake Tiedemann, a champion and a gentleman. Tiedemann is at once one of the fiercest and most polite wrestlers to ever step on the mat. He is the epitome of what good sportsmanship is supposed to look like. The talented junior will be making his first trip to the state tournament after winning his first district title last Saturday in Clarksville. Tiedemann is 39-6 this season and 108-21 for his career.
Northwood-Kensett’s Drake Tiedemann had a long and successful youth career long before he suited up in an N-K singlet, but that success continued into his high school years with last Saturday’s district tournament championship, earning the talented junior his first trip to the state tournament....
Senior Kael Julseth drives to the basket for two points in last Monday night’s 49-48 TIC East win over Central Springs. Julseth scored six points in the win and enters tournament play averaging 8.3 points per game, second best on the team.
The Northwood-Kensett boys basketball team split its final two regular season games last week, narrowly beating Central Springs while falling to non-conference foe North Iowa. The Vikings got the final week of the season started on a high note when they outlasted rival Central Springs in the Top...
Lady Viking Ruthie Conlin drives the baseline in last Monday night’s 40-32 loss to Central Springs. Conlin averaged just 1.6 points per game this season but made up for it on the boards, where she pulled down on average 4.2 rebounds per game, second best on the team this season.
With weather delays and COVID-19 protocols leading to postponements and rescheduled games the Northwood-Kensett girls basketball team was left playing its regular season finale and the start of the regional tournament in the same week. The Lady Vikings, who finished the regular season at 3-12 in...
In one of the toughest matches of the day N-K’s Tyler Mills defeated Saint Ansgar’s Derek Peterson by a 4-2 decision. Mills went 2-2 on the day but failed to advance to the districts when he placed third after winning his final match 13-9.
The next few weeks are absolutely the most exciting for high school wrestling, but at the same time, it can be a devastating ending for most as with the sectional and district tournaments, you either finish first or second, or you go home, for some seniors, never to wrestle again. So it was with...
N-K’s Olivia Stilley drives to the basket in last Friday night's 58-24 loss at Osage. Stilley came off the bench to score two points and grab four rebounds in the TIC East loss.
For one of the teams in the bottom half of the Top of Iowa Conference East last week’s schedule could not have been more difficult – the Lady Vikings, who are 5-13 in class 1A, had the unenviable task of playing Saint Ansgar,  who is ranked No. 4 in 1A, and Osage, the fourth ranked team in class 3A...
Although it sure looks like there is a lot of contact, there was no foul on this play as N-K’s Jason Hanson goes up for two points in last Friday night’s 60-27 loss to Osage. Hanson, with just one week left in the regular season, is averaging 6.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for the 6-11 Vikings.
Come tournament time one of the most dangerous teams in class 1A, the team that will most likely pull off an upset, in my opinion is the Vikings of Northwood-Kensett. This team has the talent to do it, if it gets it on the right night, N-K can and has played with any team on its schedule. The...
