The student became the teacher
The school year has been winding down for more than just the K-12 students at Northwood-Kensett. Rachel Schutter recently completed her student teaching at N-K. Schutter is a North Iowa High School graduate and was set to earn her degree from the University of Northern Iowa. While here, Ms. Schutter student taught seventh grade science with Mr. Samson, English with Mrs. Clark and Transition Math A with Mrs. Willert (seen above). She has been hired by the North Iowa school district to teach middle school English next school year.
Keeping cleaning on track
Last Thursday night, Northwood-Kensett hosted the district track meets. N-K athletes, coaches and other staff were on hand to make sure the event was a success for all involved. On Friday morning, students in Ms. Knudtson’s seventh grade study hall added their efforts to the district event as they made their way around the complex to clean up after the meet. They weven cleaned under the bleachers!
A first hand view of history
The Northwood Senior Center recently welcomed a special guest, Pat Franzen, who shared her tale of achieving and living her American Dream. Franzen was born in England in World War II separated from her family when many children were sent to orphanages and then foster homes to remove them from the dangerous wartime conditions. Franzen was eventually adopted by her foster parents and grew up to meet and marry a man from Iowa. She moved to the state and has spent the rest of her life living out her American dream on the farm and in her rural Iowa community. She is pictured at the Senior Center with pictures and relics of the war.

It’s all in the cards
Last week Northwood-Kensett first graders made a trip to get their passes to the many stories, adventures and sources of knowledge available to them through the Northwood Public Library. What did they need to unlock all of those activities? A library card, which they signed up for last Thursday. Library director Morgan Johnson is pictured above reading them a book before helping them sign up for the card needed for them to find their own reading material, as seen below.
Learning for summer safety
Before the end of the school year, Northwood-Kensett Elementary students were given a lesson in summer safety. Deputies with the Worth County Sheriff’s Office visited the playground to check the students’ bikes and helmets to make sure tires were inflated and straps were tight. The students were also taught about where and how to ride safely. They also learned how to use their left hands to signal left and right turns, as well as stops.
Getting their thumbs green
For Barb and Harlan Helgeson, the garden is their happy place. That extends to the tree they are pictured planting together in their barkyard recently.
N-K takes part in chesstival
Central Rivers AEA recently held the first ever Chess-tival, with schools from throughout the area invited to the AEA in Cedar Falls for a day of chess competition. While records were kept, the event wasn’t designed to be a tournament, but a chance for students to play chess with others they wouldn’t otherwise be able to face across a board.
