First Team All-District, Vikings Defensive Player of the Year
With the state football playoffs wrapping up last week it’s now time to take a look back at some of the top performers on the gridiron this season. The Northwood-Kensett football team, who finished the unusual COVID-19 season with a 4-4 record after losing its playoff game to North Iowa by just...
N-K’s state championship cheer squad includes, (from left) Emma Logeman, Lindsey Moore, Hayley Wallin, Kylie Robinson, Taylor Rodemeyer, Haddie Hanson and Mallory Rheingans.
Although it’s been a few years since they traveled to Des Moines to compete in the Iowa Cheer Coaches Association State Championships, leaving the team with little to no experience at the state meet, this group of seven cheerleaders, led by N-K’s longtime cheer coach Cindy Pangburn, continued the...
With the start of winter sports on the way, Iowa's student athletic associations recently released the guidelines and recommendations for COVID-19 safety measures for the seasons. Guidance for boys sports comes from the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and for the girls, comes from...
The Northwood-Kensett cross country team wrapped up the season last Thursday when they competed in the class 1A state qualifying meet in Manly at the Town and Country Club. While the N-K teams failed to send any runners on to the state meet, it did nonetheless have some success out on the course...
Despite playing less matches than everyone else in the TIC East this season, winning just three matches out of only 11 played, the Lady Vikings' Brylee Hoeppner nonetheless caught the eye of the other coaches and earned a well-deserved honor, second team all-conference. Hoeppner this season had 52 kills, nine blocks and 87 digs and was 108-115 at the service line, for an incredible 93.9 serving percentage. For her career Hoeppner collected 152 kills.
Starting the 2020-COVID-19 volleyball season with a philosophy of doing whatever it takes to get to the end with the team and coaches intact both physically and mentally, the Lady Vikings decided early on to forgo any weekend tournaments, assuring the safety of the ones they care about, but, in the...
For the past three years the Northwood-Kensett cross country teams were focused on its one star, Lindsey Davidson, who is pretty much responsible for the fact that N-K even has a cross country team. But with her success came the improvement of the others around her, and that led to a successful...
While the big hitters at the front of the net receive most of the press for their thunderous kills and blocks, toiling in anonymity behind them are the unsung heroes of the volleyball world, the libero. In the Lady Vikings' case, that means one of the best athletes on the team, Hallie Varner. This talented senior though is not your typical libero, Varner can play the whole court and her season stats back that up. So far this year she leads the team with 166 digs and is one of the team’s top performers at th
After dominating the Bison of North Iowa for over a decade, winning 13 consecutive matches dating back to 2008, it seems the tides have changed for the Lady Vikings after they lost their regular season finale 3-0 (12-25, 25-27, 17-25) to a Bison team that has now taken charge over this rivalry,...
N-K’s Kael Julseth is one of my all-time favorite athletes. The talented senior does it all on the field and in my opinion is one of the best leaders any football team could ask for. But now for the numbers that make him look even better. For this year’s 4-4 team, Julseth rushed for 549 yards and 13 touchdowns and completed almost 50 percent of his passes, going 24-52 for 624 yards and another six touchdowns, no interceptions for an incredible QB rating of 147.0.
On opening night this year the Bison snapped a seven game losing streak against Northwood-Kensett, beating the Vikings 38-21. N-K rebounded from that loss and in the final weeks of the season won its three final regular season games, averaging 65.3 points per game in the process. But last Friday...
N-K senior Kayla Senne blasts a shot past two Bison defenders in Tuesday night's 3-0 loss to North Iowa.
The Northwood-Kensett volleyball team's losing streak stretched into five matches after it lost the regular season finale to North Iowa Tuesday night in Buffalo Center, 3-0 (12-25, 25-27, 17-25). The Lady Vikings didn't play well in the first set loss but bounced back with what headcoach Heather...
Lady Viking Shallon Batton delivers a serve in last Tuesday night’s 3-0 (5-25, 8-25, 14-25) loss to No. 1 (3A) Osage. Batton was 3-3 on the night and has faced the pressure of the service line with coolness and composure this season, going 18-19 on the year and boasting the top percentage on the team at 94.7 percent.
By Mike Simmons Sports Editor As if the last few weeks weren’t difficult enough with having to face Central Springs and Saint Ansgar, who boast a combined record of 33-14, but to top it all off the Northwood-Kensett volleyball team last Tuesday night had to face its biggest challenge yet when it...
